چکیده

Cervical cancer, a malignant disease that invades the uterine cervix, is preceded by a long phase of precursor lesion known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. (CIN). The present study investigated the clinical utility of total sialic acid and lipid-bound sialic acid (LSA) levels in CIN and cervical cancer. The present study also investigated histochemical expression of glycoproteins in cervical tissue. Serum levels of TSA and LSA were measured in patients with lowgrade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL), high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), and stage I, II and III cervical cancer and age matched controls. The levels of serum TSA were significantly altered in CIN patients and cervical cancer patients with stage I, II and III. Histochemical analysis showed high expression of glycoproteins in cervical cancer as compared to patients with CIN and healthy subjects. Measurement of both TSA and LSA in cervical cancer patients could be used as an adjunct to diagnosis, monitor response to therapy and assess the staging of cancer.

Increased expression of sialic acid in cervical biopsies with squamous intraepithelial lesions

BACKGROUND Altered sialylation has been observed during oncogenic transformation. Sialylated oligosaccharides of glycoproteins and glycolipids have been implicated in tumor progression and metastases. In the cervical cancer high levels of sialic acid have been reported in the patients serum, and an increased of total sialic acid concentration has been reported for the cervical neoplasia and cer...

Enhanced sialyltransferases transcription in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

Altered sialylation observed during oncogenic transformation, tumor metastases and invasion, has been associated with enhanced sialyltransferases (STs) transcription. Increased mRNA expression of STs (ST6Gal I, ST3Gal III) has been detected in invasive cervical squamous cell carcinoma. A study of the sialic acid concentration in local tissue of cervix and in serum showed a slight elevation in b...

Evaluation of Ki67, p16 and CK17 Markers in Differentiating Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia and Benign Lesions

Background: Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is a premalignant lesion capable of progressing to cervical cancer. Despite the existing well-defined criteria, the histomorphologic diagnosis is subject to high rates of discordance among pathologists. The aim of this study was to evaluate Ki-67 (MIB-1), CK17 and p16 INK4a (p16) markers by immunohistochemical methods in differentiating CIN f...
